The Stevens family reunion was held near Boone, Iowa, this year. One of the perks of this location are the state and county fairs.
This year, we went to the Boone County Fair primarily to see the livestock — horses, cows, goats, chickens, turkeys, and bunnies.
We laughed when we discovered that, in spite of the sweltering heat, the pigs liked to cuddle.
We missed the talent show and the Boone Country Queen Pageant, but we did get to watch children playing in a sandbox full of feed corn.
Back on the Carlson farm, there were cherries to pick, pit and cook into delicious cobbler. We also had family Olympic competitions between Team Cecil and Team Lois (named after my generation’s Stevens grandparents). We played corn hole and Norweigan golf. Another challenge was to create five-minute dramas (standing ovation to Team Lois for telling the tale of Lois defeating an evil weed that threatened her florist business). The most anticipated and dramatic event, however, was the water balloon toss.
