Craft beers and ciders are thriving in Maine

There are hundreds of reason to love Maine, and thriving craft beer and cider (or in local speak, cidah) industries are two of them. Here are some of the beverage romances we had during our recent visit to the Vacationland state.

Urban Farm Fermentory hard cider in Maine
According to its website, “Founded in March 2010 by entrepeneur Eli Cayer, a Mainer himself, the Urban Farm Fermentory is an experimental fermentation center … Our array of fresh pressed Maine apple cider is spontaneously (or wild) fermented in a Farmhouse style until it’s bone dry & tart. ‘Spontaneous fermentation’ utilizes naturally-occurring yeast in the air and on the fruit, which means even the yeast culture in our cider is local.”
Belfast Bay Brewing Lobster Ale six-pack
According to the Belfat Bay Brewing website, “Owner Pat Mullen says, ‘When my wife suggested that a brewery from Maine should make a beer called Lobster Ale, a red ale seemed the perfect brew. Unlike our highly hopped neighbors beers, we decided to brew Lobster Ale to be very ‘user friendly.’ We cut down on the hops and added slight amounts of black and dark crystal to the brew. The result is a medium hopped, medium flavored, very drinkable red ale.”
